PUPPIES:

GIGI X BLUE; BORN FEB 2, 2012:  Litter Update

April 25th, 2012

We have retained two female pups from this litter.  We will be deciding soon which pup we will keep out of the two.  If you are looking for a female blue Great Dane pup we will have an excellent girl available soon, all others have been placed.

We play allot now!

The tunnel is a fun exercise.  It pops open, has different textures, it rolls and we can go through it and jump on it.

Can we trust it?                                                                My Turn Now!!!!

  Let's Play!!
  Last weekend was fun!

The girls are working on their leash training...as Mom gives encouragement.

March 23rd, 2012

They are now 7 wks old. Compare this picture to their one day old
soda picture below!

The boys are getting leash trained today.  Everyone is doing great!   No Worries the it's the girls turn next week!

The boys got their first car ride today!  They did very well.

The Pups are six weeks old now!  They spend most of they're time playing.  They will establish a pack hierarchy during this stage.  They have been introduced to many different surfaces, sounds and textured toys.  They are no longer having accidents in the weaning house.  I will begin leash training and taking them on car rides.

March 4th, 2012

Today was the pups first day outside.  They have graduated to the weaning house.

Mom is teaching them to go outside to pee and poop.  When they see Moms head peak into the house they all run out as fast as they can to be first to get a drink of milk. Before they realize it they are outside when they pee,  soon this becomes a habit. By the time they go to their permanent homes they know they are suppose to go outside to pee and poop.  It is just a matter of you learning their signal (usually a whine or anxious behavior) and them learning you open the door, which happens very quickly.

With just a few more days until they turn four weeks old, they are having longer play periods now, usually before and after eating.  Their playing consists mainly of mouthing with an occasional take down at this stage.

They are eating small meals five times in a 24 hour period now.   I no longer mash their food, it is just softened with water so it is easy to chew and still warmed so that it does not upset their tummies or make them cold.  Mom has begun weaning (shorter milk sessions) them.

Third week vs. first day (below) comparison picture.  They grow fast!

They have been wormed twice so far.  Most kittens and puppies are born with round worms which can have negative effects on their health.  As a precaution we administer a weekly series of liquid de-wormer.

Feb. 21st, 2012

Well into the second week, one of the pups scaled the pool wall and there is little room for mom so we have graduated to the Play pen now.  This is a transitional period for the pups.
This is when I will begin to introduce different items into the whelping area such as a plastic milk bottle, knotted towel, cardboard box, etc.   I continue picking up the pups daily.  I stroke their heads, body and legs to get them used to human touch.  I talk to them, and spend a few minutes with each one individually on our couch while we watch T.V. at night.

Feb. 19, 2012

They had their first meal today, Sunday 2/19.  Usually I start feeding them at three wks but because this is a large litter, Mom needs a break a little sooner.  Everyone was very excited and each pup filled their tummy.  I make a "mush" out of kibble for them and serve it warm.  They will be getting this two times a day at this point along with their normal time with mom.

Feb. 17, 2012

The pups started to open their eyes on Weds.  Feb. 15th, the night before they turned 2 wks old.  They have all opened their eyes now!

Their eyes are a beautiful blue aren't they!  All puppies have blue eyes initially, then they usually turn other colors.  Blue Danes usually have dark eyes, light eyes are acceptable but not normal.  Blue eyes in adult Danes is a recessive color and not desired because they are associated with deaf and/or blindness.

Eating and sleeping is still the main event of their day but it won't be long until they start to climb out of their pool now!

Feb. 9, 2012

The pups are now one week old!
The first two weeks the pups are deaf and blind.  They find mom from their sense of smell.  All they do at this point is eat and sleep.  Mom does a great job of keeping them clean.  I have been giving them human touch when I pick them up during normal daily routines at this point.  I have clipped their nails once so far.  Their nails are sharp like like straight pins and can make Moms tits sore & scratched up if not clipped.

Their dew claws will be removed today also.  This is in their best interest.  Dew claws are much like ostrich claws they can cut into other dogs and humans if not removed.  They can also get caught on  things and rip, causing great pain and needing major surgery when this happens after the toe bone has grown in.

Mom and pups are doing well.  I am rotating pups so they all get equal time and Mom also gets the rest she needs.

On a sad note GiGi's Vet check  revealed that she had some pups that were not born so she had to have a c-section today.  She had a total of sixteen pups in this litter, 13 survived.  This is her second c-section.  We had her spayed so she would not have to go through this again.  On a happier note Mom is recovering nicely and all the pups are doing well.

Gigi and Blue have had their second litter together, born Feb. 2, 2o12.    She had 13 live pups, 8 girls and 5 boys.  Mom is doing great and quite relieved to not be carrying them around anymore.  We are all catching up on our sleep now.

The average weight of the pups in this litter at birth is 1 lb., they are very large pups for such a large litter.  They are just a bit larger than a coke can. It is amazing how fast this breed grows during this stage of their lives.

GiGi began birthing today.  The first one came  at 1:40 A.M., a girl.
